Feedlot shelter boosts gain and feed efficiency in Iowa study
Iowa State University researchers report at the Allee experimental farm near Newell that yearling steers with overhead shelter gained more per day and used feed more efficiently than un sheltered cattle. Five year averages show sheltered steers gaining 0.4 pounds daily in winter and 0.17 in summer, with lower feed costs per pound of gain and a projected payback within two years. Recommendations include improved drainage and adding dry shelter mounds.
