White Proposes State Buy Toll Bridges Across Rivers

Des Moines. Fred R. White chief engineer for the Iowa state highway commission asks legislature to authorize the purchase of all toll bridges across the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and retire them as toll-free. Bonds secured by toll revenues would pay for the bridges and the commission would condemn or purchase privately owned spans. The plan limits new bridge competition within five miles of toll bridges and ties tolls to upkeep funding. If one bridge is bought per year, full implementation would take 17 or 18 years.
