Voters narrowly reject a 200 million flood protection tax extension, defeating funds for Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas. Turnout runs 22.4 percent with rural precincts approving while the metro bloc largely rejects, prompting council reflection and debate over funding the west side protection.
The measure would authorize up to 30 million dollars annually for 10 years to fund flood mitigation matching local and federal money. Cedar Rapids could receive as much as 15 million annually. Opponents predict hurdles but seek alternative plans from groups like We Can Do Better CR, which proposes a sales tax earmarked for specific flood projects and water supply protections.
Super Tuesday sees Newt Gingrich take Georgia while Santorum touts late Ohio gains. Romney trails among conservatives and evangelicals in Ohio and Georgia, as Paul fights for Alaska caucus victory and North Dakota results loom. Delegates total 437 across ten states.
Romney secures at least 129 delegates as Santorum 47 Gingrich 42 and Paul 10 plus. Virginia ballots see Paul as sole Republican besides Romney to qualify. Santorum forfeits Ohio delegates due to district qualification issues highlighting Romney's enduring financial and organizational edge.
