Iowa acts first in nation on long distance bill plan
Des Moines reports Iowa becomes the first state to act on a federal plan for flat monthly long-distance charges. The Iowa Commerce Commission allows customers to opt out of long-distance service to avoid access charges, while the FCC plan sets a $2 monthly residential and $4 business minimum, with increases to begin in 1984. Christine Hansen cautions higher costs could price some customers out of phone service.
