Work Begins to Stop Methane Drift at Cedar Rapids Landfill

A plan to halt methane migration from Cedar Rapids Landfill moves ahead with Blackhawk Foundation drilling 13 boreholes along the south perimeter to collect gas and burn it off. Initial pilot hole completed February 16 at a total cost under 15000. Five Arrested in Linn County for drunk driving charges

Five persons were arrested Sunday in Linn County on drunk driving charges. William R. Flattery, 18, Marion, faced additional improper registration counts after being stopped at county road E-70 and Highway 218 at 12:23 a.m. Edward D. Julich, 30, rural Palo, was nabbed at Blairs Ferry Road and Sixth Avenue in Hiawatha at 3:25 a.m. James R. Berkley, 33, Hiawatha, was picked up in the 300 block of Shelley Lane NW at 9:25 p.m. and charged with eluding, suspended license, speeding, improper right-side travel, and signaling faults. John V. Kilpatrick, 47, SW, was arrested in the 3000 block of Sixth Street SW on a left turn yield violation. Thomas G. Trachita, 27, SW, was arrested in the 1700 block of 16th Avenue at 10:10 p.m.

C R man charged after knife and revolver incident

Delane E. Mooney 26 of Ingleside Drive SW was arrested on a charge of assault and carrying a concealed weapon after officers found a knife on him in a southwest side neighborhood. A 16 year old youth reported Mooney called to him, then fled when the knife was seen.

Iowa Supreme Court approves LeGrand as senior judge

The Iowa Supreme Court okayed former justice Clay LeGrand to become a senior judge. LeGrand, 72, retired from active status Feb. 26 after 15 years on the bench and will continue work without extra compensation beyond retirement pay. He was assigned to the Supreme Court in the new role.

Protests Rise Over Social Security Plan for Federal Workers

About 600 Iowa postal workers federal employees and retirees gathered in Iowa City to oppose a reform bill that would put future federal hires into Social Security. Organizers warned of a $185 billion retirement deficit in 15 to 20 years and urged lawmakers to protect existing retirement benefits.

Fire destroys unoccupied home on Otis Road

A Sunday evening fire damaged an old house at 2571 Otis Road SE, unoccupied for three years and owned by Lillian Condos. Velma Burger, at the same address, said the property was slated for demolition. Fire officials call the blaze suspicious and investigations continue.
