Beef Grading Questions Aired at Short Course
At an Iowa State University short course, cattle feeders learned that feeding cattle to choice grade may not always be most profitable due to feed costs and price spreads. Experts: choice grade aids eating quality, exotic breeds require heavier feeding, and promoting "Iowa corn-fed beef" could create a premium product. About 130 attendees.

Murphy Seeks Higher Corn Loan to Boost Farm Income
James L. Murphy of Run Town, Democratic candidate for secretary of agriculture, urged farmers and farm leaders at the National Farmers Organization meeting that the 1972 corn loan rate be raised. He argued that advance knowledge of policy would let farmers with rotations and input decisions maximize gains, while those without it would see reduced payments. Murphy said the rate, tied to 1971 acreage, should reflect higher costs and encourage conservation practices. The call comes as he notes enrollments for the 1972 program lag behind 1971 levels and asks Secretary Butz to announce plans promptly.
