Vietnam veteran Ray Asmus of Clinton completed a five day 100 mile walk to raise about 2500 for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City despite left leg pain and hills. He and his wife planned the fundraiser for Cedar Rapids Friday morning.
Gov. Terry Branstad named John Schaffner interim executive secretary of the new Iowa Racing Commission. Schaffner, 39, will work with the five commissioners to frame Iowa's racing and parimutuel system and start next week until a permanent director is chosen. He draws no extra pay, earning $31,948, while commissioners will be paid $6,000 annually.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association objects to the federal plan to close Flight Service Stations in Cedar Rapids and 255 other cities. The Cedar Rapids station, the state’s busiest with 23 staff, serves Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Waterloo and Quad Cities, offering weather and aeronautical data. The FAA will consolidate to Fort Dodge, with other Des Moines Ottumwa Mason City and Burlington sites closing as the Fort Dodge facility comes online in 1985. The group warns the move harms safety and local economy while supporting some economies and plans to keep existing stations as satellites. Cedar Rapids bid to house 11 290 square feet at 79 707 a year.
Sunnyvale California AP high school student Robert Nelson an 18 year old Fremont High School pupil pleaded innocent to a misdemeanor charge of malicious vandalism after erasing eight weeks of classmates work from Corvus Systems terminals. The school says the act was deliberate and Nelson faces up to six months in jail.
An unarmed MX missile was launched at 9 10 p m local time from Vandenberg Air Force Base California marking the first test of Americas next generation nuclear weapon. The 71 feet long 195000 pound missile arced over the Pacific trailing orange flame and gray smoke en route to drop dummy warheads near Kwajalein Atoll. Maj General Jack Watkins called liftoff a piece of cake as the first of 20 planned tests with deployment planned for 1986.
