SPENCER AP The local sports goods shop was burglarized at night, with $1400 in cash, checks, and merchandise stolen. No Rush on Enlistments After New Draft Policy
The new rule allowing enlistment without induction orders has not spurred a rush at Cedar Rapids offices. Only two men signed up since last Friday, both for the navy. army and air force stations reported inquiries but no enlistments, and the marine corps showed no interest. Navy officials clarified that enlistees must present a signed draft board statement confirming no induction orders, with postposed students allowed to enlist during postponements. The policy applies only to active duty enlistments, not reserve branches, and will end at midnight June 14. Twenty four Cedar Rapids men left Friday to join the armed forces, part of Linn County’s June quota. seventeen were part of the original June quota, with others screened or transferred. One marine enlistment announced: Douglas R. Stone, 20, of Marion Route 1.
