Violence flared across France as the election campaign ended. Police reported 34 injured in clashes between Communists and De Gaulle supporters, with disorder at Petain and Moch meetings and tear gas used in Brittany.
James Nurre an 18 year old part time country club employee suffered an ankle injury when his leg was pinched between a service elevator and its shaft at the Cedar Rapids Country club Saturday night. He was taken to Mercy hospital for X rays and treatment with help from Cedar Rapids firemen and ambulance staff.
An explosion at a power substation in downtown Washington knocked out power to the White House and federal buildings including the Atomic Energy Commission and the treasury. Two workers, T. K. Kirsel with severe burns and Frank Fasnacht with minor burns, were injured. Traffic lights failed in Georgetown as Georgetown Hospital ran emergency operations.

M/Sgt. Thomas V. Maher of Marion Iowa is confirmed alive in Tokyo Japan after a false casualty report spread by a unknown caller. Maher medical corpsman at Camp Omiya hospital says he is on duty and writes his wife daily. His wife checked with the War Department in Washington and found no death record. A wedding anniversary bouquet funded by a money order from Camp Omiya was also arranged by another soldier, Cpl. John W. Weiland, whose wife Cedar Rapids learned of the hoax as well.
A 600 mechanic strike at Pan-American World Airways disrupted flights to London Paris Rome and Frankfurt and threatened to spread to San Francisco Miami and London. The walkout stems from the layoff of 89 mechanics, 69 of whom were former AOA employees, despite job guarantees from the merger. Director James Horst noted expected stoppages by port stewards and luggage handlers affiliated with local 504.
The Yellow and Checker Cab companies in Iowa City were sold Saturday to William Luckey of Columbus Junction and John Stevens of Iowa City. Fifteen taxis are involved. The sale became effective Friday and the buyers filed for a name change to the Yellow Checker Cab Company in Johnson County court.

A headon collision on highway 20 two miles west of Manchester injured three people. Charles W. Hathaway of Waterloo suffered a back injury, Mrs Hathaway a fractured shoulder, both in serious condition. Robe rt L. Offerman 24 of Delhi sustained cuts and bruises. They were taken to Delaware County Memorial hospital. Investigated by Highway Patrolman George Ponsford and Sheriff Arthur Longseth.
Services for Adelia Viola Inman widow of the Rev Loren W Inman who died in a Cedar Rapids hospital will be held at Bethel Baptist church Marble Rock at 2 p m Monday Burial is in Marble Rock Cemetery Friends may call at Turner chapel until 9 p m Sunday Mrs Inman was born November 22 1869 at Marble Rock and lived most of her life there.
Doris Irene Bamert died Friday at her home 1513 Twelfth Avenue SE. Funeral services set for 10:30 a m Monday at Beatty chapel with burial in Shiloh Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.

Milwau kee-Downer college for women will have a male president for the first time in 56 years. Dr. John B. Johnson of Parkville Missouri will succeed Lucia Briggs, who has led the college since 1921, on July 1.
Delegates to the 92nd annual Augustana Lutheran synod were treated for food poisoning after illness struck early Saturday. St. Marys Hospital reported several victims, some discharged later, while others remained. The delegates stayed at Whiting Hall on Knox College campus. officials could not identify the food source.
