Acting NCI director Dr. Guy R. Newell told a House subcommittee that cancer deaths are falling across all under 35 age groups and that new drug classes and safer cigarettes aid the fight. He noted 250 chemicals are under test for cancer links and more than 35 states run screening programs for cervical cancer. Newell argued the goal is to reduce incidence and mortality and to eventually eliminate all human cancers, while disputing reports that up to 90 percent of cancers stem from environmental factors.
