U S journalist Robert Toth is cleared to depart Moscow after an extended KGB questioning session. He plans to return to the United States with his wife and three children, saying the release amounts to an admission of a frameup. Brzezinski called the detention and interrogation a misstep and warned of possible consequences for Soviet authorities.
The Supreme Court ruled that employers need not grant employees Saturdays off for religious reasons when a union seniority system blocks such scheduling. The decision overturned a lower court ruling that Trans World Airlines violated the Civil Rights Act by denying Saturdays off to Larry Hardison of the World Wide Church of God. The Court did not rule on the Act’s constitutionality.
Cedar Rapids may appoint a new police chief within a week or two. Councilmen Richard Phillips and Hal Schaefer backed either Capt Ray Baker or Asst Chief Gareth Clift, with Safety Commissioner Ed Colton. Colton hopes to appoint Baker or Clift at Wednesday’s meeting after both ranked first and second in civil service testing to fill the vacancy since August.
