Hog Cholera Regulations Become Effective July
Dr Maynard Speer extension veterinarian at Iowa State University warned Tuesday that new hog cholera regulations take effect after July 1 1949. The legislature outlawed vaccines except in emergencies and tightened swine movement and garbage feeding rules. Swine entering Iowa must be ear tagged unless exempt, and movement requires permits, health certificates, and vaccination records. Swine from eradication Phase I may not enter Iowa except for immediate slaughter and animals must be identified and treated, with strict quarantine and dealer transfer limits. The Iowa program aligns with a national effort begun in 1960 to eradicate hog cholera, with penalties and indemnities tied to official inspections. Prompt reporting of suspected cases aids producer finances.
