Council Awards Contracts for Police Station Additions

Blahnik Construction Co. was awarded the contract for a 71 by 48 foot addition to the police station at 310 Second Ave SW. The bid edged the $30,000 estimate by Architects Leo C. Peiffer and Associates by $850. The addition on the Third Street side will house vehicle maintenance and temporary parking for police cars and motorcycles. Completion is targeted within two months. Peiffer says both projects can finish in 30 days, with daily progress reports to George Lee, water works superintendent.

Freese Awarded Water Main Contract in Marion

The Marion city council awarded Milan W. Freese Inc a 3 580 contract for 2 639 feet of water main on Wilson avenue SW. The completion date is June 1, but work has not yet begun. Mayor Johnson urged timely completion and noted prior projects ran over. Freese also holds water main work on Fifth avenue and Foote street SW.

Hargrave Low Bid On Cedar Rapids Street Project

Hargrave Construction Co. submitted the low bid of $19,818.80 for reconstruction and asphaltic concrete hot mix surfacing on Southeast Cedar Rapids streets. The project covers First Street SE, Sinclair Avenue SE, Blake Boulevard SE, Sixth Avenue SE, and Fourth Avenue SE. Estimated cost was $23,776 and completion is set for July 31.

Man Sentenced to 30 Days for Park Disturbance

Robert Donald Whitney, 21, of 1134 Nineteenth Avenue SW, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail for disturbing the peace after a disturbance at Allendale park. Judge Loren M. Hullinger Jr ordered city and county attorneys to review Whitney’s police record following the incident near Twenty-second Avenue and Thirteenth Street SW. A 17-year-old playground supervisor reported Whitney dunked several teens in a park wading pool and attempted to throw her into the pool.

AOK Pak Co to Open Cedar Rapids Trial Basis

Man Fined For Use of Ammunition in Federal Court

Norman L. C. Johnson formerly of Waterloo was fined 500 dollars in Cedar Rapids federal court for converting 3000 rounds of government owned ammunition to his own use. Judge Edward J. McManus allowed payment in 100 dollar monthly installments starting August 1. Imprisonment was suspended and Johnson placed on one year probation with the fine due as a condition. He was charged as a National Guard member with taking the ammo. a May verdict found him guilty. An extortion case trial for Ross James DeFrancesco, 39, is set for July 7 in Dubuque.
