Farm income outlook for 1964 shows muted drop

UPI reporting that a U S agriculture department review says new farm legislation cushions the expected 1964 income decline. Net income may fall from 1963's 12.3 billion but less than the predicted 5 percent plus drop, with higher payments under wheat cotton and feed grain programs and varied price effects across commodities.

The Linn County dairy promotion committee schedules an 8 a.m. Sunday breakfast at Cedar Rapids airport Terrace room to honor Deanna Powell of Ryan as state dairy princess before her 9:18 a.m. flight to Chicago for the tenth annual American Dairy Princess contest with 21 state contestants.

District Lamb Show Set At Columbus Junction

The third annual Southeast Iowa 4-H and FFA quality lamb show will be held Saturday at Smylie's Livestock salebarn in Columbus Junction. Judging starts at 8 30 a.m. Cooperating groups include Iowa State University state department of vocational agriculture the Iowa State Sheep Association county extension service and the Rath Packing Co. Maryland 4-H Delegation Plans Jones County Visit

A 33 member Maryland 4-H group from Frederick County and five leaders will arrive June 30 for a week in Jones County Anamosa. Activities include a July 4 party and Cedar Rapids industry tour around July 2. Jones County 4-H members will visit Maryland next year following exchanges with Massachusetts Kentucky Nebraska Texas and Manitoba Canada.

Lepto Study Launched At Iowa City

A three year project at the Institute of Agricultural Medicine Iowa State University and the U S Public Health Service funds leptospirosis research in 10 southeastern Iowa counties Johnson Benton Linn Jones Cedar Muscatine Louisa Washington Keokuk and Iowa Dr Franklin H Top and Dr William F McCulloch lead the study with support from physicians and veterinarians Leptospirosis spreads from animals via urine and can infect humans via contaminated objects or water It is an occupational risk for veterinarians and others handling animals Preventive measures include animal vaccination rodent control avoiding contaminated waters and protective gear for workers.

Small Takeover Of Corn Likely

Washington reports 1963 crop corn under price support at a five year low while wheat prices also fall to their lowest since 1950. USDA says 387,698,578 bushels of 1963 corn placed under price support loans and purchase agreements through May with redemptions of 46,349,603 bushels, leaving total takeover not more than 341 million bushels.

Beef To Be Added To Food for Peace

The Agriculture Department announced plans to offer beef to foreign countries under the Food for Peace program. A spokesman said local currencies would be accepted as payment and no sales agreements would be made before checking for impact on regular beef exports.
