Cedar Rapids school board will not alter the 1964 summer program tuition system after an attorney general ruling questioning tuition. Enrollment reached a record 4,924 with $49,182.50 collected by Monday. board aims to study the ruling further before recommending changes.
McKinley Junior High staff told the Cedar Rapids school board that an experimental industrial arts program will launch next school year. James Freeman said the goal is to broaden exploration over manual skill training with visual aids and industry speakers. The plan adds blue print reading in seventh grade and new electives in eighth and ninth grades focusing on crafts electronics and metalwork.
Center Point schools express interest in joining five Linn County districts in a study of school problems. Superintendent E Robert Stephens and county superintendent Ira Larson received letters about participation. The board seeks vocational training discussion and potential long term reorganization plans with Cedar Rapids Marion Springville College Community and Linn March districts.
The Cedar Rapids school board approved 16 as the minimum age for posthigh school courses and guaranteed all offerings will be open to women. The action follows a state board rebuke over plans to restrict some classes to male graduates. The state board may review the plan Friday and the district will use the same enrollment criteria, including completion of ninth grade or age 16, plus aptitude tests or prior records. Dr. Arnold Salisbury said revised criteria will be sent to the state board and discrimination claims were denied. New programs in electronics technology, machine technology, and machine operation are planned next year with expanded data processing courses.
Nine educators receive board expressions of appreciation for 26 to 44 years of service in Cedar Rapids schools. Names include Amy Christian 26 years Leonard Paula 39 years Leone Sutherland 43 years Gladys Thomann 39 years Lillian Clark 35 years Marjorie Donahue 36 years Gretchen Trumpp 44 years Ross Miller 33 years Ruth Whaley 4 years, with careers spanning Harrison Tyler Franklin Washington and Roosevelt campuses.
