An artist’s conception of a disc star found in Cygnus by a University of Arizona and NASA Ames Research Center team suggests that if aligned with the solar system the white hot disc could engulf Earth. The disc is about twenty times wider than thick and radiates twenty times the light of its central star, with planets believed to be forming around it.
Attorney for Michael Bottoms says Bottoms wants to turn himself in to authorities after escaping Linn County Jail with Thomas Chase. Sheriff says Bottoms will require assurance he will not be stopped at roadblocks. Sheriff compares Bottoms to James Earl Ray. Bottoms was serving one year for assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reports the nuclear arms race and expanded arms trade elevate the risk of a general nuclear war. U S and Soviet forces include about 1 054 ICBMs and 9 000 warheads for the United States. the Soviet Union has roughly 1 500 ICBMs and 140 strategic bombers with some 4 000 warheads. The study notes improvements in guidance, satellites, and early warning raise both capability and danger, with 1 386 military satellites launched over 20 years and 125 nuclear weapon accidents in 30 years without a detonation.
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance warned Latin American leaders at the OAS conference in Grenada they cannot ignore U S appeals for human rights. He pressed for justice as a tool against terrorism, citing Brazil's stance on military aid and urging concrete actions. Grenada Prime Minister Eric Gairy opened the meeting with a call for an international inquiry into UFOs.
President Carter voiced strongest objections to the Soviet detention of Los Angeles Times correspondent Robert Toth in Moscow. He warned of possible retaliation and cited international press coverage and Helsinki agreement discussions as factors shaping any response. Washington AP report says the House Ways and Means Committee approved a multibillion tax on oil with debate over revenue use to begin. The levy could raise gasoline costs by seven cents a gallon by 1981 and aim to rebate up to 45 dollars per person annually to consumers. The panel indicated proceeds should not fund oil industry incentives, with the tax rising in three steps starting next year.
The Williams murder retrial in Linn County Cedar Rapids is postponed two weeks to July 5. Judge James Donato ordered the delay due to a related Minneapolis hearing on exhumation of Albert Bowers, a YMCA janitor, whose body is buried there.
