Food shows smallest price rise in 1981 amid higher marketing costs

Americans spent 285 billion on food in 1981 with prices rising less than most items. Clothing up 4.8 percent while transportation climbed 12.1 percent. Farm value of grocery foods rose only 3 percent, driven by larger supplies and lower livestock prices. About 30 percent of consumer food dollars reach farmers, 31 cents go to labor in marketing, and 8 cents to packaging. Marketing costs remain the main driver of higher food costs.
