Sewer backups hit Cedar Rapids after Monday rain
Cedar Rapids public improvements commissioner Wayne Murdock reported widespread sewer backups and basement floods after a heavy Monday downpour. Most calls concerned sanitary sewer backups, with 95 percent, and the west side especially Cedar Hills bore the brunt. He cited a failing pumping station and illegal foundation tiling as major factors, plus clogged storm basins from yard debris. The city plans a stronger warning system and higher sewer spending to prevent recurrence.
