A series of explosions at the Westfalian Anhalt explosive works near Reinsdorf killed from dozens to thousands as fires raged. Evacuation ordered, censorship imposed, and troops and guards moved in after a second blast at 8 30 pm.
The National Cash Register company files a $78 000 suit against the Iowa liquor control commission. The case goes to Polk county district court next week. The board canceled a lease or purchase contract after seizing 32 machines. The company says the contract was a purchase with installment payments.
Brisk winds cooled the day after a forecast high near 94 degrees. The 9:45 am reading reached 89, dropping to 87 by 2:45 pm as clouds gathered. A heavy rain began around 3 pm, and the morning was two degrees warmer than yesterday’s similar hour when a summer high was set.

Ames of Traer was named grand master with N L Hicks Marshalltown senior grand warden and J Guy Swartslander Indianola junior grand warden. Appointees include Hal L Lockwood Charles City deputy grand master and George E Farmer Cedar Rapids deputy grand secretary. Deputy grand master Wal L Lockwood is a Charles City attorney. George E Farmer reappointed deputy grand secretary is a Cedar Rapids attorney.

Dr. E. M. Breniman of Ackley was arrested by U S deputy marshal Joe Petrus on narcotics charges. He is accused of distributing and selling a derivative of opium and failing to keep records. He remained jailed in Linn County after missing a $2,000 bond set by U S Commissioner Edward J. McPeartland. An indictment had been returned by the federal grand jury in Sioux City.
Burbank California AP reports Wiley Post halted his planned stratosphere flight to New York due to ignition trouble in the Winnie Mae. The stop delays a high altitude attempt and no injuries are reported.
Mrs. Ei Jen DeLong, 63, of Maynard, was sentenced to ten years by District Judge H E Taylor for the December 30 slaying of her former husband. The jury found her guilty of second degree murder May 4. she will be moved to Rockwell City women's reformatory likely Friday.
Donald Duane Sutherland, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sutherland, drowned in the Maquoketa River during a summer playground swim at Monticello. He disappeared midday and his body was recovered by Reed Clark and Carl Rohr at about 8:30 pm. He would have completed the fifth grade and is survived by two brothers and three grandparents.
A local beer ordinance passed by the council after a Tuesday hearing and a Thursday petition. The measure takes effect after publication. about 25 license blanks issued, with July 1 licensing delayed to allow filings and a planned weeding out process. The petition opposed state character, inspection and license fees.
A Rock Island passenger train collided with an M and S L freight near Morning Sun at 6 45 am injuring eight and killing Eli Meyers 51 of Oelwein. Cedar Rapids crew member A W Stonebraker suffered a broken arm while M C Taylor F J Peck and others received cuts bruises and head injuries. Meyers died at Burlington hospital after being buried beneath baggage and a safe.
The Wisconsin senate killed Governor La Follette’s $209 million state works relief program in a 19 to 14 vote. Thirteen progressives and one Democrat supported the measure while thirteen Democrats and six Republicans opposed it.

In Oskaloosa twenty one slot machines were seized in raids Wednesday night. Two men, Bob Hancock of Kansas City and James Webster of Miami, were taken into custody. Police said they were connected with a carnival showing.
DES MOINES AP reports commissions vesting sheriff's powers on three Sioux City policemen were signed by Governor Herring and mailed to the men Tate Wednes day. Officers Jon Young NuaTsed Patsy O'Hara of Woodbury county will investigate graft and corruption linked to slot machine and liquor rackets as the Woodbury grand jury reconvenes June 26 to continue the probe into vice conditions.
Governor Clyde L. Herring, visiting Sioux City, called the sudden death of Park A. Findley, head of the Iowa bureau of investigation, in Louisville, Ky, shocking. He praised Findley as Polk County’s best sheriff and a dedicated National Guard officer.
J. J. Cheetham 43 of 415 Twenty sixth Street SE a traveling salesman for Medusa Portland Cement died of internal injuries after falling from the fourth story window of the Tall Corn Hotel in Marshalltown He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died at 2 PM An inquest was scheduled Coroner R R Haupert said Cheetham had moved to Cedar Rapids with his wife on March 15 from Dubuque where the family home had been for years
O. E. Carroll a private detective from Iowa City Iowa died Thursday afternoon in El Centro California. Death was believed due to heart disease. Carroll had sought an interview with Police Chief Sterling Oswalt the day before but did not appear. He ran a private detective agency in Iowa City with a Cedar Rapids branch and is survived by his wife in Iowa City.
Park A. Findley 60 chief of the Iowa state bureau of investigation died of a heart attack in Louisville. He had been on leave since April 9 and had long directed criminal work in Polk County. Findley introduced ballistics and lie detector use in Iowa and served as brigadier general in the Iowa National Guard. Surviving sister and brother noted. efforts to locate another brother were underway.
Park Findley’s illness worsened as Woodbury county’s grand jury opened a graft and corruption probe. He departed to California as the scandal involving the attorney general’s office surfaced.
Francis Jacobs, 12, drowned in an eight foot pool at a sand company in Rock Island Illinois while wading with his sister Beatrice, 14. The accident occurred Thursday as he slipped beneath the water.
