Chicago cattle and hog markets show steady to firm prices with hogs up to 15 cents on midweek trading. USDA figures indicate salable hog receipts around 10 000 and cattle at 5 000 with varied steer and heifer price ranges and spring lambs easing slightly.
USDA cattle report from Sioux City notes 7,000 salable receipts with calves absent and steady to firm tone. Slaughter steers mostly steady to higher with some weakness in lighter weights. heifers steady. cows scarce but firm. stockers and feeders varying with light weights active. Prime 1,100 lb beeves around 36.75, steers 31.50 to 35.75, commercial around 29 to 33, and good to choice heifers 30 to 33.
Receipts 9 500 head with calves 50 and a mix of fed steers and heifers trading steady to higher. Run of fed steers leaning choice, cows scarce yet steady, bulls and dealers little changed. Prices: large run of high to prime steer futures at 36 75 to 37 50, most good to choice heifers and yearlings 31 00 to 34 75, 914 lb heifers around 36 50, commercial cows 28 00 to 29 00, utility 22 25 to 25 50, canners 18 00 to 22 00, bulls up to 30 50 and select dealers to 38 00.
Cattle receipts 2,500 with calves 300. Slaughter steers steady to 25 cents higher, heifers steady to strong. Nebraska fed steers range to 33.00 with top 36.50. good and choice steers largely 32.50 to 36.25. Top choice around 825 pound heifers 35.00. other good and choice heifers and mixed gear 31.00 to 34.50. Stockers and feeders scarce.
Waterloo livestock prices show steers and heifers ranging up to 21.50 per cwt with top hogs at 160 to 170 pounds fetching 19 to 21.50. Various weight bands for slaughter hogs and sows listed, with prices advancing to 21.75 per cwt for larger lots and lighter ranges for heavier cattle.
Des Moines reports Tuesday hog receipts estimated at 40 000, down from 44 500 last week and 32 000 a year ago. Monday unloads at two Minnesota packing plants and about 30 Iowa yards, with some out-of-state movement. Demand active, prices steady to 25 cents higher, some loads 50 cents up in outlying areas. Prices listed for various weight ranges and sow stocks reflect overall firmness with regional variations.
Ottumwa hog market reports a 25 cent higher trend with top bid at 21.25 dollars for slaughter hogs. Price ranges across weights from 160 to 550 pounds are listed with various bids. light and heavy hogs show declines toward the upper or lower ends.

Chicago AP reports grains moved higher on Tuesday as short covering emerged. Wheat climbed about 2 1 2 percent with July at 2.39, corn up around 1 1 2 percent to 1.72, oats about 2 percent, rye up 1 4 percent, soybeans little changed to up 2 cents, July contracts listed. lard edged higher to 16.60.
AP report lists cash grain prices in Chicago for wheat oats barley and soybeans. No. 1 yellow wheat around 1.70 to 1.75 per unit with sample 1.68. No. 3 oats heavy mixed about 86 to 142 per unit. Barley nominal 1.35 to 1.60 for feed 1.10 to 1.30. Soybeans not quoted.
Cedar Rapids bulletin from Washington announces 18 as the minimum age for WAVES joining the Navy Women’s Reserve. Eligible women must be high school graduates or equivalent and enlistment starts in Cedar Rapids with completion in Des Moines before training at Great Lakes. Eugene Manuel, 18, sworn in as seaman recruit in Cedar Rapids.
Bobby Daw son, 9, of Keokuk, was killed Monday near Keokuk when a car struck his bicycle on the highway five miles north of town. The driver John Cator of Keokuk said he did not see the boy until it was too late.

Marion board of education appointed Norman Hatton Cedar Rapids architect to draft plans for a new high school addition south of the current building between the school and Fourth Avenue. Residents previously approved a 200000 bond for the project. Mrs. Milton Pflughaupt convalesces after major surgery at St Luke's hospital. St Mary's Circle St Mary's circle of St Joseph's Catholic church meets Thursday at 7 30 in the parish hall.

Fort Hood officials released the names of four Iowa enlisted men killed in a private plane crash in Oklahoma. Cpl. John W. Gregorich of Bernard, Pfc. Dale E. Denlinger of Maquoketa, Pfc. Claire L. Fett of Des Moines, and Pfc. Bertram W. Kirk of Lamotte perished alongside the civilian pilot. Their bodies were found Sunday in a mountainous area near Springtown, Oklahoma.
Yale University awarded an honorary doctor of science to Dr. Edward C. Tolman, the University of California psychologist dismissed for refusing a loyalty oath. Yale lauded him as a valiant defender of academic freedom and noted his service to the country in its hour of need.
Pfc Wallace K Markland 27 of Vinton is killed in Korea according to a War Department notice. He served in the 31st Infantry and was recalled last September after being a reservist. He had been in Korea since December 4, 1950. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Sam Markland and six siblings. brother Sgt Wayne Markland 25 in Japan with the Air Force for 18 months.

Des Moines United States News reports Hal R. Sheridan 58 faces a manslaughter charge for the December 1949 hit run that killed 47 year old Des Moines woman Arlyne Spears. Judge Murrow moved the trial to the September term due to Sheridan’s severe illness and recent surgeries. An April 1950 indictment followed Spears’ death when the auto fled the scene.
Davenport report: Irving Haefs, disposal agent, said the Rock Island arsenal salvage section will accept bids on used equipment. Bids open June 26 with inspection allowed through June 25. DES MOINES AP The Iowa Department of Agriculture issued a stop sale order against 10584 dozen frozen canned eggs to Fairmont Foods of Webster City after sampling. The action follows earlier orders and targets products used by large bakeries ice cream makers hotels and cafeterias. Hearings for other firms with tied up cans were also opened including Cudahy Packing Bedford and Longnecker Manila with officials contesting the charges and awaiting hearings later in the day.
