Linn County draft officials announced 20 men scheduled to depart Cedar Rapids by bus at 8 a.m. next Monday for Des Moines induction. The list includes Laurence A. Schulte Fairfax John P. Rizos 718 L Street SW Franklin W. King Center Point Walter E. Buck 1200 Twentieth Avenue SW and others. A 3:30 p.m. meeting was set for Thursday. The draft board also forwarded induction orders for two physicians Dr. Robert E. Stark Phoenix and Dr. Charles R. Scholl Youngstown Ohio both first priority. One Marine enlistment Thomas D. Driscoll 18 Mechanicsville was reported.
Defense Secretary Marshall said the United Nations offensive in Korea exceeded expectations and reduced the risk of a major Communist counterattack. He noted improved prospects for rotating U.S. troops home, potentially up to 25,000 monthly, after his Far East trip and briefing to President Truman.
Police investigated two thefts. A service station on Mt. Vernon road SE reported $45 stolen from the cash register between 7 30 and 8 10 p m with $21 50 in checks. Universal foundry on I avenue NE reported 700 pounds of lead valued at 84 stolen over the last four or five weeks.
Two accidents involving four cars and a truck halted traffic at the Eighth avenue and Third street SE intersection Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported. Pearle Tyler and John Lasek collided, then hit a truck driven by Elmer Svoboda. Minutes later Elmer Smith and Edwin Vorba collided. Officer charged Lasek with failing to stop at a traffic signal.
The Friday deadline marks the cut off for second quarter estimated tax payments for 1951. Herman Stecklein of the Cedar Rapids Internal Revenue office urged taxpayers that by 4 30 p m Friday they should have paid the second quarter estimate and filed any amended return if needed.
Leonard Bruce was elected commander of the Hanford post of the American Legion at a Tuesday night meeting in the Memorial Coliseum Armory. Officers named include Wendl Kulish Leo C. Ruby Harry Strother Joe Machek Ed Kuba Rev Z F Pauk Russell Manatt and Joe McIver. A Boys State report from Camp Dodge preceded the election and twenty of twenty five Cedar Rapids Boys State attendees were present. Officers will be installed at the post’s August meeting.

Cedar Rapids retailers face loss of cigaret sales permits if renewal forms are late. The city council set a June 15 deadline for applications. About 350 permits exist, with roughly 150 still to be received. If not received by Friday, processing before the June 30 expiry may be impossible.
Leo F. Donohue, 26, of Onslow pled guilty to drunk driving before Judge J. E. Heiserman and was fined 300 dollars plus costs. Robert A. Burke, 44, of 956 Tenth Street NE pled innocent to the same charge. Donohue’s car left the road on Highway 151 near Linn Jones county line. two passengers faced intoxication charges.
Robert Alloway. 42, of route 2, received a 30 day jail term on Tuesday for leaving the scene of an accident after his car struck James Schinky. Justice of the Peace Charles Benesh suspended the sentence later the same day and ordered Alloway paroled to his employer.
The sheriff's office probes the theft of a car radio from a vehicle at Hill Top garage 4620 Mt. Vernon road SE. Owner Willard Clary says the radio vanished between 6 30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday from a car owned by Scott Sanders.
Paul Lilley reported two calves feared stolen were located on his farm northwest of the county home. Newman's Tuesday secured a judgment of 137.75 dollars against Mrs. Milo S. Prusek Jr in an account suit.
Milwaukee resident Ralph E. Loeffler slipped on an ice patch and fell backward while rushing to catch a bus. He managed to keep hold of his copy of Will Cuppy's The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody.
The H and W Motor Express Company imposes an embargo effective Friday on 33 Eastern Iowa towns including Calmar Decorah Garnavillo Guttenberg Marquette McGregor Monona Ossian Postville Spillville and Wyoming. Freight will be accepted Thursday for Friday delivery with a proposed 30 cent higher rate to be heard by the Iowa Commerce Commission on July 16.
The court dismissed the petition for rehearing claiming the law firm Miller Davis Hise and Howland had no right to file after Rutledge’s death. It held that a defendant who has had a sentence affirmed cannot erase a costs judgment by suicide. District court costs totaled 2221.04 dollars, including 823.60 for trial transcripts. none paid yet pending the supreme court ruling.
Cedar Rapids community chest funds aid more than 100 local youths to attend one week at Camp Huaga Waubeek or Wapsie Y. A $1000 allotment supported camping fees with families paying the balance. WAUKON The Waukon independent school board set July 11 for a new general contract on a grade school building after no bids were received by the Tuesday deadline. Bernard Merfeld, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Merfeld of Dubuque, died from a skull fracture after a team bolted and dragged him 300 feet while he fed his father's farm outside the city. The accident occurred Tuesday night with the horses running away.
McGregor resident Capt. Jack Slyfield recovered a large ice box adrift on the Mississippi River Tuesday. The box floated downriver and now lies on Slyfield’s float awaiting the rightful owner to claim it.
The world’s largest combination bomb shelter and underground garage is planned beneath Boston Common. It will hold up to 270000 people for atomic attacks and provide parking for 4000 cars. Construction, supervised by Motor Park Corporation, aims for completion in 18 months with RF loan of 9000 dollars and eased steel restrictions.

Word reached relatives in Cedar Rapids of the death of Neil M Chapman 56 in Eugene Oregon after a four months illness. He was a printer for Superior Press before moving to Oregon twelve years ago. Survived by wife De Etta two children George and Anita and several grandchildren a brother Don Chapman of Cedar Rapids.

California's oldest presiding judge, Edward B. Silva, 97, of Newcastle in Placer county, aims to remain justice of the peace until his 100th birthday. He has lived through the Gold Rush era, witnessed boom and ghost towns, and has handled mainly traffic violation cases over 16 years.
The Crimean Astrophysical Observatory photographed the center of a stellar system using infrared rays. A large cluster invisible on ordinary photos was seen with new equipment, marking the first European capture of interstellar matter that glows under starlight.

In Batavia New York the Floyd Mileham family slept through a nighttime fire that destroyed their barn. The two volunteer fire companies arrived too late to save the building. The family, consisting of husband wife and two sons, were awakened to the loss.
