Two Cedar Rapids boys hurt in scooter crash prompt age checks

Two 8 and 12 year old boys were seriously injured when their VeeRide scooter ran a stop sign and was struck by a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Dennis Candler. He was cited for driving with a suspended license and lack of liability proof. The crash spurred Cedar Rapids to seek stronger age verification for the scooter program and to study better rider controls. Both boys were hospitalized with life threatening injuries after the Wednesday afternoon wreck near Mount Vernon Road SE.
