Heroism in GI Repulse Of Attack

A force of 100 North Vietnamese attacked a U S artillery base south of Da Nang but were driven back by 196th Light Infantry defenders. Sgt. William Cruse led the defense and earned a Silver Star as 11 Americans died and 32 wounded. Viet Cong losses totaled 73 across four attacks. An American helicopter was shot at near the DMZ with no injuries.

Park Bear Mauls Girl in Yellowstone Camping Area

A 5-year-old St. Paul girl was injured by a grizzly bear at Trailer Village in Fishing Bridge campground Yellowstone National Park. Park Supt. Jack Anderson said the girl Daphne Jax suffered a chest wound and lacerations and is listed in serious condition at the park hospital. A ranger killed the bear around 8 30 pm Tuesday after the attack near Yellowstone Lake.

Skipper Cmdr Albert McLemore testified that a lag daily message outlining plans for destroyer escort deployment around the Australian carrier Melbourne was not received by the U S S Evans before the collision. He said the 24 hour period covered June 2 to June 30, and that the other two Evans destroyers also did not receive the message.
