Odd Accident Takes Life of Bruce Oldfield
A Cedar Rapids high school senior, Bruce Oldfield, 17, drowned in the Cedar River after being struck by a speeding motorboat off the Ellis Park pavilion. The boat operator, Jack Kuhn, 22, said he did not see Oldfield. witnesses saw him thrashing before vanishing. The body was found about two hours after the 5:15 p.m. incident. Coroner Brosh indicated left neck and shoulder injuries from the propeller likely caused death. Oldfield, born June 4, 1937, was to graduate from Franklin High School Friday. Survivors include his mother, a brother, a sister, and relatives in Cedar Rapids. The body was taken to Rohn funeral home. funeral arrangements to be announced.

Expectant Mother Burned in Delhi Gas Blast
Special to The Gazette Delhi an explosion wrecked the Margaret Smith residence early Wednesday. Mrs Marlin Smith about 26 years old suffered severe burns to face hands arms and body and is in serious condition at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. The blast occurred as she lit a gas water heater in the basement. flames climbed the stairs, burning her on the porch. Her son David 9 had his hair singed but was not seriously hurt. Firemen contained the blaze to the basement and the house sustained major damage plus loss of the back porch and windows. The Smiths who live next to his mother were taken to hospital by Gill Ambulance. Mr Smith had burns on back and chest but not serious. Margaret Smith who is Delhi assistant postmaster was not injured. The house is a total loss.
