Highway plan links Great Lakes to Mexico via Midwest route

The Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce traffic bureau reported Thursday a study backing a Great Lakes to Mexico federal highway. The proposed route would use existing highways from Manitowoc to Puerto Penasco, passing Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona with key cities like Madison, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Ottumwa, St. Joseph, Topeka, Santa Fe and Tresov along the way. State highway commissions in several states have approved the plan, with Wisconsin and Arizona awaiting action and national action possible after state approvals.

Youths Captured After Road Block Attempt

AP dispatch details two youths escaping from a Joliet institutional ward who tried to force a car through a roadblock near Mt Pleasant. One, Charles Rejister, 19, from Springfield Alabama, was wounded in the hip and leg. John Fletcher, 17, of Quincy, Illinois, was also wounded. Police pursued along Highway 218 as deputies reported shots fired. Meanwhile Muscatine officials discussed a threatened water and light utility strike that could cut off services, with the utilities board seeking to meet with the union to avert action.

Woman Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash and Fall

A 16 year old girl and Mrs James Miller were injured after a two car collision at Twelfth Street and Fifth Avenue SE in Iowa City. The girl fell from a second story window and survived skull injuries. Mrs Miller’s husband and Vishek Jr were driving on the wrong side prior to the crash. Both victims were taken to St. Luke’s hospital in good condition.
