New York stocks staged a brisk recovery Thursday, reclaiming much of the losses from the prior sessions. Fractions gained by many issues, with more than a point in some cases, supported by a total trading volume around 1,750,000 shares.
The Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce traffic bureau reported Thursday a study backing a Great Lakes to Mexico federal highway. A 16 year old girl and Mrs James Miller were injured after a two car collision at Twelfth Street and Fifth Avenue SE in Iowa City. The girl fell from a second story window and survived skull injuries. Mrs Miller’s husband and Vishek Jr were driving on the wrong side prior to the crash. Both victims were taken to St. Luke’s hospital in good condition.
Sioux City man McDowell seeks a new trial in a tax case after pleading no defense to evading 44 354 in federal income taxes for 1947 1948. He faces sentencing in Cedar Rapids on June 30, with further legal disputes over the amount owed.
Two Marion teens David Martin and Ronald Hess faced a stop sign and ignition incident on Eighth Avenue and Sixth Street, with Mayor Elmer Seevell fining them $10 but allowing work with the city to satisfy the penalty.
