Illinois defeats ERA again in House vote
Springfield Illinois—In a 101 to 64 vote the Illinois House defeated the proposed Equal Rights Amendment for the second time in a year. The measure needs 107 votes to pass, leaving Illinois the only northern industrial state not ratified. Local leaders blamed intramural Black Caucus politics and convention boycott tactics for the setback. The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau warns the state’s economy could lose over 18 million if conventions are barred by nonratification.

Smoking makes up three quarters of heart attacks in women
Boston University Medical School researchers report in the New England Journal of Medicine that smoking alone accounts for up to 75 percent of heart attacks in women under 50. The study links daily cigarette counts to premature heart attack risk, with 35 or more cigarettes daily boosting risk 21 fold, and 15 to 24 cigarettes daily raising it 4.6 fold, based on 55 female hospital heart attack cases versus 220 noncoronary admissions. Dr Dennis Sloane notes this isolates smoking risk from other factors.
