Stocks edge along as market shows mild recovery

The New York stock market posted only light advances in select steel, motor, rubber, mail order and tie issues while many stocks paused. Turnover was about 200,000 shares, a week’s low. Motors did reasonably well amid talk of stronger Q2 results, but traders doubted real progress from government-business talks and noted signs of a flattened downturn. A feared veto of the farm bill by the President loomed over tax plans, adding uncertainty to the outlook.
