Quitline Iowa will stop offering free nicotine replacement patches and gum at month end due to budget cuts. Since 2008 about 54,300 Iowans called the helpline with roughly 27,450 receiving two weeks of NRT. Swanson cites a roughly 20 percent quit rate at six months versus 5 percent cold turkey. Callers can still get two weeks of NRT if they contact by June 30, and free counseling remains available via 1 800 784 8669.
