Government launches legal probe of oil spill

The federal government announced criminal and civil investigations into the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Attorney General Eric Holder said laws under review include the Clean Water Act the Oil Pollution Act and the Endangered Species Act. He warned charges would follow if warranted.

Cedar Rapids Council Votes to Return to Veterans Memorial Building

The Cedar Rapids City Council voted 7 to 1 to resume regular meetings in the Veterans Memorial Building on May's Island by February 1, after the building endured flood damage in June 2008. Some members favored the former federal courthouse space but ownership and modification limits remain unresolved.

Powell declares Korean War a U S victory at Iowa memorial

Former U S official Colin Powell told 700 attendees at Veterans Memorial Park that the Korean War was a victory not forgotten, as Iowa City veteran Bill Ambrisco recalled 13 months in Korea. The dedication honored 507 Iowa war dead with a black marble monument.
