Iowa Guard's 832nd Engineers Prepare for Afghanistan Deployment

Spc. Brian Kessens and Cedar Rapids area soldiers of the 832nd Engineer Company depart for training as about 2,800 Iowa National Guard members join the 2nd Brigade Combat Team on deployment to Afghanistan. Kessens, a 35 year old corrections officer at Oakdale, leaves his two daughters behind but trusts their care with his ex-wife.

Iowa Guard ties cited in 75 Iowa deaths report

Iowa National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Greg Hapgood says in a 2004 news conference that of 75 Iowa deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, 21 had strong Iowa Guard connections, linking service to the state force.

Iowa Guard engineers earn respect of regular military

The Iowa National Guard earns wide respect from regular forces as 21 of 75 Iowa casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan had Guard ties. Four of these were in the 224th Engineer Battalion, with the 832nd Engineer Company preparing for autumn Afghanistan deployment. Bloody Israeli raid on flotilla sparks crisis
