Radiation Center Offers Hope and Honest Care for Cancer Patients
Laurie Van Dyke reports on Cedar Rapids Margaret and Howard Hall Radiation Center adjacent to Mercy hospital. Visitors note a warm staff patient rapport as cobalt rays treat over 100 cancer patients in nine months. Treatments average daily 12 to 15 patients, ages 6 to 90, with many not curable but life extended and comfort improved. Doctors stress early diagnosis, transparency about limits, and ongoing contact with patients. Competition from Iowa City cobalt center and distant patients influence local use.
