Massive Crane Creek fish kill near Readlyn prompts probe

About 40,000 fish including bluegill and bass died across a 20 mile Crane Creek stretch in northeast Iowa. The Iowa DNR is tracing possible causes after reports of dead fish southwest of Readlyn and around Bremer County, with water tests not pointing to manure runoff. Officials review drainage tiles and speak with landowners while noting a prior kill in 2023. The state has investigated over 80 fish kills since 2019, with the largest recent loss linked to the East Nishnabotna ammonia spill. Contacts for information are Brett Meyer and the DNR spill line.
