Iowa's three public universities expect general education operating budgets to total 1.72 billion in the new fiscal year, up from 1.66 billion last year. The rise follows higher state appropriations and tuition, despite prior funding cuts and partial appropriations requests.
Cedar Rapids backers press ahead for a state gaming license as Iowa lawmakers mull a 2025 moratorium that could halt further license approvals. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is slated to vote February 6, 2025, on a Linn County license despite past rejections in 2014 and 2017 and a 2022 moratorium blocking new licenses.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Liz Dupuich ordered Luke Wade Truesdell to undergo mental competency testing at the state's forensic hospital, suspending all court proceedings in the quadruple murder case. If found competent, trial plans resume. if not, he returns to hospital for further restoration efforts. A status hearing is set if the evaluation isn’t completed by August 16.
