Local mental health providers face staffing strains as Iowa records show 26,000 residents used the 988 Lifeline from May 2023 to May 2024. The figure trails the 31,000 calls during the first year after launch but far exceeds the about 12,000 annual calls before 988.
The Iowa Supreme Court denied a rehearing request from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland ACLU of Iowa and Emma Goldman Clinic, clearing the way for a six week abortion ban with limited exceptions to take effect. The court also dissolved an injunction blocking the measure, pending district court action.
Cedar Rapids union members and lawmakers press Iowa to reinstate collective bargaining for public employees. They argue 2017 changes by Republicans weakened protections, limiting negotiations to base wages and sealing recertification cycles while curbing health, overtime, and layoff discussions. The action seeks to restore stronger collective bargaining standards for public workers.
