A new carpet and drapery store named Carpets, Draperies and More will occupy the former JCPenney Patio Shop site at Second Avenue and Fifth Street SE in Cedar Rapids. Owners Dick Nemec and Ken Cameron plan remodeling and expect an early August opening with a grand opening late August or early September. The store will offer carpet and custom drapery departments, bath and bed shops, and a linen mill outlet with discounted and second quality items. They lease the first floor from Acme Investment Co. Also noted is a 1946 atomic test underwater at Bikini Atoll.
The Soviet Communications Ministry announced a new postage stamp honoring Moscow 1980 for the Summer Games. It depicts the Kremlin with a rainbow backdrop and the bear cub Olympic emblem, bearing the inscription 22nd Olympic Games Moscow-80.
Cedar Rapids police report a surge in moving radar effectiveness with 255 speeding arrests the week of July 15 21 up from 198 the prior week. Traffic stops also raised license Violation charges totaling 77 while overall arrests and tickets reached 520 versus 472 the week before. Burglary arrests fell to six and theft rose to 25 with numerous other violations recorded.
