White House inflation adviser Barry Bosworth warns food prices rise faster than overall inflation with beef up about 54 percent year to date and sugar prices high. He predicts further beef increases, estimates a typical urban family could pay about six dollars more weekly for groceries, and notes US sugar commands a price above world levels. The Agriculture Department foresees 8 to 10 percent food inflation for 1978.
A former Iowa Commission for the Blind employee accuses ex director Kenneth Jernigan of turning the agency building into an armed fortress and installing a telephone taping system and listening devices to monitor conversations, including legislators during tours. The worker says Jernigan later sought to silence him in 1976 with Roger Jepsen's aid.
Senatorial candidate Roger Jepsen confirmed aiding a former Iowa Commission for the Blind employee to obtain a loan to start a trucking business in 1976. Ray Raymond testified that Kenneth Jernigan installed listening devices at the commission and sought to fortify its offices. Raymond secured a $24,700 loan for a tractor from Central National Bank with Jepsen as co-signer, limiting Jepsen's liability to $5,000.
A North Central Airlines twin-engine plane with 43 aboard went down in a cornfield shortly after takeoff from Kalamazoo Michigan. The pilot lost power in one engine forcing an emergency landing. The co pilot broke his back and a passenger broke a pelvis. Twenty two others were treated for injuries but not hospitalized.
Linn County Conservation officials urged Cedar Rapids to back a $1.25 million plan for the Squaw Creek dam and lake with city funds, county loan, and grants but Mayor Donald Canney favored a bond issue as the cleaner financing method. He warned against shifting the burden to taxpayers and signaled possible support for bonds.
