Rain Welcome, More Needed To Save Crops
Rain through Tuesday and Wednesday eased drought concerns in eastern Iowa but cropland still needs substantial moisture. Cedar Rapids extension crop specialist Jerry Gogan said the rain was welcome but insufficient to avert continued crop stress and a following two inches of rain are needed. The Cedar Rapids airport logged 0.62 inches in 24 hours to Wednesday morning while other areas saw up to a half inch. northeast Iowa reported only light rain. Statewide, scattered showers from Monday into Wednesday ranged from a half inch to an inch with some locales higher, ending a three week dry spell threatening Iowa’s corn crop pollination. Gogan warned a few cool drizzly days help but more rain is crucial for pollination and moisture retention.
