Rain May Be Too Late To Save Iowa Water Supply

Iowa faces a drought crisis with 90 communities reporting water access problems. Emergency permits allow towns like Des Moines Ames Osceola and Bedford to draw from new sources as rainfall remains below normal. About 20 to 25 southern communities haul water while the state endures its driest season in years.

Iowa Weather Devastates Corn as Drought Grips State

The National Weather Service reports 85 percent of Iowa in extreme drought with severe conditions elsewhere. Heat and low rainfall devastate central corn across 20 to 24 counties, with Secretary Lounsberry calling it a total corn crop failure in central Iowa. Some northwest counties may still yield, while cattlemen seek water in seven counties and fish stocks suffer in dwindling streams. Federal aid flows to 995 farmers in 41 counties through disaster payments.

It Was Worse in '36

Des Moines reports recall of the 1936 summer heat wave lasting 16 days with multiple days above 100 degrees. The peak state average on July 14 reached 108.7 across 113 stations, while some locales exceeded 110. The heat followed a brutal winter, reducing corn yields and prompting federal and presidential attention, including a Roosevelt visit to the drought-stricken region.
