A conflict of interest in denture manufacturing in Iowa is reported with a Cedar Rapids charge against a spokesman for the Iowa and American Dental Association. Across the state, 20 to 25 communities haul water for residents amid heat. A Chicago North Western freight train derailed on the east edge of Stanwood at 3 a.m. Thursday blocking both tracks. Twenty five of the 147 cars left the rails. no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. Some cars carried scrap metal and furnaces. One line was expected back in service by evening while detours persisted.
The FTC asks Congress to approve a new cigarette warning and update labeling on low calorie claims. The FDA orders estrogen manufacturers to distribute a warn ing brochure noting cancer risks from long term use and possible links to breast, cervix, vagina or liver tumors. New rules set calorie limits and advertising restrictions for low calorie foods.
The Cedar Rapids police aide program to expand women and minority staff died without a fight Thursday morning. Mayor’s ad hoc committee and Police Chief Gareth Clift endorsed abandoning the plan due to lack of interest among target participants. The program would have offered station work and duties without powers, paid at 60 percent of a rookie salary.
Inflation persisted in June with consumer prices up 0.6 percent matching May while the economy expanded at 6.4 percent annual rate in the April-June period. Real spendable earnings rose 3.4 percent due to tax adjustments, and GNP growth for Q2 was revised with strong sales and inventory buildup driving the gain.

Egyptian military spokesman reports two Libyan planes shot down and 40 tanks plus 30 vehicles destroyed in border clashes. Twelve Libyan soldiers captured and 30 saboteurs arrested. nine Egyptians died in previous artillery fighting.
