Chicago cattle and hogs showed mixed changes with demand steady for lightweights while sows edged down. Vealers weak, steers and heifers steady to higher. sheep mostly steady. Omaha reports slow fed steer trade with some price softness, cattle receipts around 12,000 in Des Moines meal markets.
Cattle prices vary with steers at 28.50 while stocker and calf trades show steady to strong ranges. Early sales indicate weaker heifers and calves with bids easing. bulls steadier and killing calves largely steady across sale notes.
Prices paid at the Cedar Rapids plant depend on quality and distance hauled. Rates listed include hogs 2600 for 30 lb, 26% for lighter weights, and several grades from good butchers to packers across 270 to 600 lb ranges, with calf and alfalfa market notes appended. French commandos landed 430 miles south of Hanoi and at Quang Ngai in a lightning assault destroying rebel arms stocks. The action follows a weekend parachute raid on a Red supply base, and officers say the supply network may need a new layout.

Mary Fisher 69 of Sioux City died at a hospital from injuries after a two car crash at a residential intersection July 10. She was the driver of one of the automobiles involved in the collision.
In Dresden a Communist court condemned sixteen workers to prison, the largest show trial yet against East German rebels. A freelance photographer received the stiffest sentence life imprisonment for leading the June 17 uprising in the Polish-German border town of Nieśwież.

Sheriff probes stray bullet strike on a Ce dar Rapids man’s car Sunday night. Ray Sauer of 1121 Hubbard Avenue NE reported his windshield was hit about 9 p.m. as he passed the Old White Lodge on highway 149 south of highway 30. He believes a group of youngsters fired the shot.
U S Population Washington AP Scotty McLeod security director for the state department says in a public letter he would never knowingly employ a Socialist in policymaking work and will seek to remove any such person. The letter, released June 1 following a 1.7 percent population rise, references a Socialist leader and discusses employment inquiries.
Republican leaders said they still aim for a July 31 adjournment but would extend the session to finish priority items. Must bills include appropriations, reciprocal trade Act extension, outer continental shelf oil rights, refugee legislation, higher postal rates, farm credit, military public works, small business loan agency, and treaties on commerce and navigation. Knowland and Martin said they will push all musts first and may keep sessions long to clear them.
Special to The Gazette Yearous Yearous, 51, suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries in a Monday morning crash near Elkader when his tractor was struck broadside by a car. He was thrown 25 feet, the tractor split in two, and he received emergency care then was moved to a Dubuque hospital.
Russell F. Shafer a Cedar Rapids man 19 of 1100 Twenty-seventh Street NE enlisted for training as an army radio repair man. The army and air force press station in Cedar reported his processing at Fort Gordon Camp Gordon Ga. Shafer will attend fixed radio station repair school after signal corps replacement center training.
Mrs Alden Porter 55 of Oelwein died Sunday night in a local hospital. She led Eastern Star activities in Oelwein and was active in the American Legion auxiliary. Survived by husband employed by the Great Western railroad and two sons and a daughter. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. Body at Hintz funeral home.
Sixty eight Iowa households formerly on relief are now supported by wages after rehabilitation of disabled workers. The state vocational rehabilitation division notes over 300 people in 68 families were moved off relief, saving public funds as their average wage income exceeds welfare costs. the prior monthly welfare outlay was over $7,000, about $100 per family, while current earnings average just under $200 per person monthly for those reintegrated.
Jess Ridenour has returned home from University Hospital Iowa City after several weeks as a patient.
Mrs Earl Domer of route 31 was knocked unconscious by a hot electric wire blown down in a Sunday thunderstorm while returning from the barn. She regained consciousness at St Luke's hospital and is listed in good condition with shock. Farmhand Vern Kendall discovered her in a water-filled area.
Senator Lehman of New York condemned Senator McCarthy for labeling anti Semitism in attacks on staff aides Roy Cohn and David Schine. He said such charges are pure demagoguery and urged a bias free debate defending anti communism without prejudice. He urged Senator Monroney to join in denouncing the brash aides and their conduct.
President Eisenhower told Chancellor Adenauer that foodstuffs will be placed at your disposal for relief in the East zone. He reiterated humanitarian motives and the offer to supply food if the Soviet Union allows entry into the Soviet zone, in response to Adenauer's July 13 plea.
President Eisenhower urged passage of a bill to create a small business loan agency. Senate debate opened with opposition over a section that would end the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, though Capehart noted RFC lending would move to other agencies.

A diocese spokesman warned of health risks if the strike lasts long.
The clerk's office will not open on Mondays this week and next due to the deputy clerk Herman Richmann of Marion taking vacation. It will resume its usual Monday openings on August 3 and will stay open Tuesday and Wednesday this week during an intermediate session of the court.
