About 50 railway fans arrange a last trip on the Crandic line between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Car No 120 will depart Union bus depot at 8 a.m. return around noon. The final round trip follows a May 30 service discontinuation, with proceeds to museum display.
Iowa authorities seek a youthful hitchhiker who robbed a Mason City motorist, Earl Kester, who surrendered in Park Rapids after wrecking a car stolen from Herbert Anderson of Mason City. Kester said he took $40. Cerro Gordo County Attorney Robert H. Shephard seeks Kester’s return for robbery charges.
Des Moines AP reports the American Red Cross has allocated more than 312 000 dollars for emergency services and rehabilitation in flood struck northwest Iowa as of Saturday.
Paul Hewitt a Jefferson grade school teacher knows about 400 folk songs learned in the navy and from southern singing friends. He plays harmonica from age five and often sings to his two daughters at home. He says southern versions vary by state and he can tell where a singer is from by the tune.
Roy Bjustrom of Algona ran a sidewalk poll of shoppers on whether the new store front should have a stepped- gingerbread cornice or a straight across modern top. His tally favored the fancy style by about 38 to 16 until Mrs. Bjustrom declared the top should be straight across, modern style, and the vote stood.
Attorneys for two Utah slayers seek U S Supreme Court review to halt their firing squad death sentences. They argue they were denied counsel at a preliminary hearing and forced into self incriminating reenactment of the crime in Beaver in October 1949.
Des Moines AP report describes farmer Lowell Dillard driving south of the city encountering teenage shooters who fired five pistol shots into a hog-waterer near his driveway. He pursued the carload of youths at up to 90 mph until his vehicle struck a concrete drainage ditch in the Fort Des Moines housing area, ending the chase after about five minutes.
Davenport sheriff Peter Wildman ordered a full probe into the apparent drowning of John Heidt 49 whose body was found in the Mississippi river near Linwood. Identification was confirmed by a sister and there were no signs of violence on the body recovered after about two days in the water.
Davenport reports two more safes battered and rifled Friday night raising last week burglary losses to 6595. Authorities step up investigations as citywide crime flareup continues.
Des Moines AP report: Nels A. Nelson refused jobless benefits after quitting Miller Products due to time card punching. Iowa Employment Security Commission ruled he left without good cause attributable to his employer, citing Isa bel Harris precedent. Other rulings: Hilsabeck entitled to benefits. Rice quit voluntarily and lacked a claim.
Police said thieves carried off a 500 pound safe from Jacobs Brothers service station containing 300 in cash and 150 in checks after entering through a window and loading the safe into a car. Two other break ins were reported, including an American Legion home entry for candy and change and a garage ransack with change taken from a soda machine.
Council Bluffs police report a 22 year old motorist Jack L. Lambeth drove into a 10 foot hole on Broadway during street repairs. Lambeth was booked for running a barricade but claimed the barricade had been knocked down before arrival of officers.
The annual Harvest Home celebration in Coggon will run Friday and Saturday drawing thousands. It features farm and garden exhibits, fancy work and baked goods, a Main street midway with shows and rides, free acts at 2:30 and 8 p.m., and dances in the school auditorium sponsored by the Legion post and local merchants.
Polk County Attorney Clyde E. Herring ordered an investigation into alleged alteration of three traffic tickets in a Des Moines municipal court. The tickets, filed by police, had Dan DeHeck’s name and address removed and a “Dan Watters” name substituted on one slip.
Harvey Weiss of Vinton, 17, won the Iowa State Teen-Age Road-e-o in Iowa City and will represent Iowa at the national event in Washington, D C, Aug 11 to 16. Marvin Burgraff of New Sharon placed second and Gaylen Doane of Gilman third. Weiss previously won Cedar Rapids title on June 6 and placed second in the Iowa 4-H driving contest in 1950.
In Des Moines the Iowa Safety Department urged motorists to drive with respect for the living and for the 14 who died on our highways just one week ago today. Safety Commissioner Pearl W. McMurry and Highway Patrol Chief David Herrick warned that good weather could revive dangerous conditions and urged drivers to reduce speed to avoid exaggerated mistakes and greater crash violence.
