UCLA names Ron Ballatore new swim coach

UCLA appoints Ron Ballatore, head coach at Pasadena City College since 1967, to lead the Bruins swim team. Ballatore, 38, succeeds George Haines who resigned to coach Foxcatcher Farm Swim Club. Ballatore is a former All American backstroker at Southern Illinois and has coached at the Olympic Games for three nations.

Nastase Fined $15,000 by Los Angeles Strings

World Team Tennis fined Ilie Nastase $15,000 for missing a match against the New Orleans Nets. He played a $300,000 invitational event in New York earlier Wednesday and remains under a three year contract with the Strings, which includes a penalty clause for missed matches.

Bobick Signs to Fight Montes in California Bout

Duane Bobick 41-2 signs to face Mexican champion Fernando Montes in Pico Rivera California Aug. It is his first bout since parting with Joe Frazier and he trains in California under Murphey Griffith. Montes won six fights in 1977 five by KO including Eddie Lopez KO. Bobick last fought world in South Africa beating Mike Schutte after a KO loss to Kali Knoetze.
