Des Moines report says House Majority Leader Jerome Fitzgerald seeks to couple an urban revitalization measure with Senate usury legislation. He urged Democrats in a closed caucus while Senate leaders resist delaying the session. Republicans pressed to accept the Senate usury proposal to end the session after a 43 to 7 vote.
United Press International reports strikes spread through Cleveland Louisville and Philadelphia. In Cleveland 2000 officers walked out over 13 firings halting most services and prompting Mayor Dennis Kucinich to seek National Guard help. Louisville firefighters strike over pay causing shutdown of most fire houses while Philadelphia’s 20000 non uniformed workers walk out after a rejected contract offer.
A Cedar Rapids teenager Keith Coonrod 17 was killed when a truck crane toppled during clean up of a derailed Rock Island freight train near Peoria Illinois at about 11 a.m. Don ald K. Coonrod 52 and Fred Herrick 39 were treated for minor injuries. The accident occurred during removal of a hopper car and the boy was in the cab when the crane tipped.
