Unofficial Monday livestock receipts show hogs 8000 head cattle 18000 sheep 2500. Hogs ended lower week due to heavy Thursday receipts. light weights down 1.25 to 1.50, heavier 1.75, sows down 1.75 to 2. Receipts were heavy and Monday marked largest July run in eight years. Cattle receipts also heavy with mixed price shifts across grades.
Sioux City AP reports cattle 300, calves 100, scattered sales steady. Westerns held for Monday. Hogs 300 steady, butchers 250 lbs down $22.50. Heavier butchers mostly $19.00 to $22.00. Sows $13.50 to $20.00.
Receipts estimate 17 000 this week vs 17 500 prior week and 22 000 year ago. Prices steady to firm with some 25 cent gains. Top hog price $22.65, with barrow and gilt ranges shown for 160 to 550 pounds across multiple weight classes.
Prices for hogs delivered at the Cedar Rapids plant were steady. Reported figures include No 2 yellow corn at $1.52 per bushel and new crop soybeans at $3.60 per bushel.
German Shepherd dog named Butsche Sweglers Mapleview owned by Bob Rush of 3511 Old Marion road NE Manitowoc Wisconsin was rated best of breed at a Manitowoc dog show and had previously earned best of breed at Cedar Rapids on May 31. The 15 points earned qualify the dog for ACE Kennel Club championship.
Steven Jackson nine suffered a broken right leg and a nose laceration needing fifteen stitches after he collided with a parked car on the First Avenue W hill. The Palo owner, William Kottmier, reported the impact threw the boy over the car hood and to the ground.
DES MOINES AP The annual ASC township elections run Aug 14 to 20 with 1 604 townships voting. A 3 member community committee and 2 alternates are chosen. top vote getters become chairman and vice chairman and also serve as delegates to county conventions. County committees elect a chairman vice chairman regular member and two alternates at the convention.
A federal employee Harold Mahana of the Veterans Administration hospital faced a $2 fine plus $5 costs from Police Judge Emil Trott after he refused a meter deposit claiming immunity. He argued federal status exempted him from the city parking ordinance. James Noska of Center Point, Route 1, paid $67.50 in fines after two arrests here on July 4 for driving without a license and for altering that license.
Walters, a Waukon painter, pleaded guilty before District Judge G B Richter to uttering false bank checks. Cletus Mullark of Lansing filed the complaint. He received a seven year term in the Anamosa reformatory and was paroled to George Murray of New Hampton with conditions to repay all misused funds, finish paid in advance paint jobs, and abstain from liquor and gambling.
Miss Jeanette M. Bender 69 of Fayette was reported in serious condition in an Independence hospital after a Friday afternoon crash on Highway 150 a mile south of Independence. Her car struck the rear wheels of a trailer truck driven by Roger Wirts of Bettendorf. both vehicles were heavily damaged and she suffered a fractured pelvis, cuts and shock.
Johnson county prepares an auxiliary police unit to aid regular law enforcement in emergencies. Organized by county American Legion posts, with Dale Worib Rich as chairman and J L Smith assisting. Stations planned in Solon Lone Tree Oxford Swisher Coralville and Iowa City. Members will wear armbands and ID cards and serve on 24 hour call.

Ethel Gorsuch returns from Joliet to visit daughter. In Des Moines, Royal Arch Masons centennial convocation observed at Iowa State fairground.

Judge Charles Benesh suspended licenses Saturday for five motorists in municipal court. Stanley Schloeman 35 of 509 Fifth Avenue SE was fined 100 dollars and costs for reckless driving and faces a 60 day license suspension. David P Willis 608 Third Avenue SW lost his license 30 days and was fined 15 dollars and costs for leaving the scene of an accident. Harold L Wischmeyer 442 Fifth Avenue SW Alvin B Brown 723 Fourth Avenue SE and Julius E Montdeary 312 Eleventh Street each lost 15 day suspensions with 10 dollar costs after speeding in 25 and 20 mile zones with speeds of 36 to 38 mph.
Glen Gertensberger, 24, of Independence, was arrested in West Union on bad check charges. He was arraigned in justice court and held on a $2,000 bond for the October term of district court. Gertensberger allegedly wrote ten dollar checks under the name Eldo Hoffman, passing them in Elkader Elgin Oelwein and West Union stores.
Des Moines AP reports Iowa farmers are pegged to harvest about 581.229 million bushels of corn in 1954, up from 1953’s 581.145 million. Planted area 10.197 million acres, yield about 57 bushels per acre. Soybean and oats figures noted. soybeans planted 2.167 million acres. oats forecast 238.914 million bushels from 16.126 million acres.
Iowa City police Lt Leonard Sims urged a maximum speed law to cut traffic fatalities. He cited Nebraska gains and urged the next legislature to act. He proposed suspending licenses for violators and requiring proof of insurance to reinstate, noting insurer impact on driver behavior.
Illinois soil experts at the University of Illinois have adopted higher potash standards to match rising crop yields. The shift increases fertilizer needs in deficient soils from 270 to 400 pounds of muriate of potash per four year rotation and from 120 to 300 pounds on soils with slight potassium availability, to be used by all partnered soil testing labs.

Three state governors returning from a Far East trip reported to President Eisenhower that Japan should engage in limited and controlled trade with Communist China. They stressed no recognition of Red China, noting Japan’s proximity to and significant potential with a 500 million Chinese market. Govs. Thornton, Fine presented the report. Gov. Senator Hickenlooper says the field for the eighth circuit judgeship vacancy created by Judge Seth Thomas of Fort Dodge has been narrowed to five. All five have Iowa Republican leaders' approval, and a recommendation will be made early next week. The eighth circuit covers seven states and the final candidates could come from any state. The senator did not disclose the remaining contenders.
