Aid to students goes beyond money in TRIO programs
Shirley VanMeter returns to college through TRIO and Upward Bound, programs that remove barriers to higher education. The initiatives help low income students like VanMeter complete degrees, with TRIO reporting a 95 percent success rate and scope at Scott Community College. VanMeter, once a ninth grader with a GED, plans to study biology at the University of Iowa and research animals in the wild.
