Chicago based UPI reports Iowa joined 20 states increasing cigarette taxes this year. Iowa raised the per pack tax from 5 to 8 cents. New York boosted its tax to 10 cents, while Texas and Washington hit 11 cents to become the highest in the nation.
New York sets ten cent gas tax scene with Iowa and 22 others at eight cents per pack. Mississippi hovers at nine cents with six of seven states boosting revenue by one cent per gallon. Nebraska adds half a cent. Iowa's levy rises from six to seven cents, aligning with most peers. Over a decade, twenty five states lift gas taxes and forty five consider new or higher cigarette levies.
