Rebels and Peace Unit Duel Hotly
In Santo Domingo, Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and Honduran troops of the inter American peace force exchanged heavy fire with Dominican rebels for about 30 minutes on Tuesday night. Rebels then traded shots with U S para troopers nearly two hours later but no injuries were reported. The incident, the most serious since mid June, threatened mediation talks by an OAS committee. The Brazilian commander charged the rebels with an unprovoked attack after rebels moved machine guns to new positions and ordered families from their homes. The rebels say junta troops fired first from behind inter American lines surrounding the rebel stronghold in downtown Santo Domingo during a checkpoint encounter with Honduran troops.
