Cedar Rapids Mayor Lee Clancey proclaimed every Friday in July and August as Bib Friday to honor the Overalls all Over event. The three month project began last month with 30 two person statues parodying Grant Wood's American Gothic. Clancey calls it fun and a tribute to Wood and bib overalls.

First Lady Christie Vilsack Outlines Thyroid Nodule Surgery

Des Moines First lady Christie Vilsack enters Mercy Medical Center for routine thyroid nodule removal. A governor’s spokesman says the procedure is routine with a full recovery expected. She will stay one or two nights as Gov. Tom Vilsack postpones duties to accompany her and plans to resume duties after her release.

Teens Charged in Church Fire At Independence

Two 13 year old boys Nick Thomas and Davie Mawdsley face second degree arson and second degree criminal mischief charges after Independence police say they sprayed a silicon substance on the Presbyterian Church wall door and sidewalk and set it ablaze at 6 45 a m. The damage exceeds 1000 dollars and Mawdsley was released to parents while Thomas remains in juvenile detention.

Central City names William Mertens new superintendent

The Central City school board selects William Mertens from 28 applicants to lead the district starting July 1 on a two year contract. Mertens, 57, previously led Riceville Community School District for six years earning a $75,000 salary. He cites small school advantages and locality as reasons for the move.

Iowa Supreme Court upholds AIDS transmission law

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled 7-0 that knowingly transmitting HIV is not unconstitutionally vague. Justin Alman Keene of Dubuque had pleaded guilty to criminal HIV transmission after unprotected sex with an unidentified woman in October 1998 and later challenged the law’s clarity. Justice Mark Cady said the crime requires only that transmission be possible and that the statute provides fair notice of its meaning.
