First recipient of self contained artificial heart reventilated
The world’s first recipient of a self contained artificial heart was returned to a ventilator in Louisville Kentucky after pre existing medical problems. The patient a diabetic in his 50s remained awake and able to communicate with his family by nods and gestures. Doctors said the return to ventilation was due to non heart related conditions. Hospital officials said the family was at his side and the patient could squeeze a hand and move in bed. He previously had a heart bypass around 1992 and suffers chronic kidney failure with multiple heart attacks. He is expected to be taken off the ventilator in coming days.
