The second Merchants' day at the All Iowa fair runs noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Free coupons from Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa merchants reduce gate charges and midway prices. Previously merchants held separate days, but this year coupons from both sources are valid together.
A Cedar Rapids event lineup lists 7:30 p.m. Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band and Sound Generation at the Grandstand, 9 to 12 p.m. dancing at Fun Time square, early entry day for beef and swine shows with 4-H and FFA livestock, a mayor luncheon with speakers Guy, Robert and Ray, plus demonstrations of fabrics by Connie Allis. Final circus performances, Quality Park contest weigh-ins, marionette shows, and square dancing complete the program with ongoing displays in the Fine Arts and Farm Youth buildings.
The fair offers Tuesday or Wednesday admission with a coupon, an entire carload for 2 dollars between noon and 4 p.m. on both days, and midways discounted coupons from noon to 6 p.m. Grandstand shows include Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band and Sound Generation on Tuesday 7 30 p.m. and Wednesday 3 and 7 30 p.m. The Sound Generation features 27 John Brown University students. The first tractor pull drew over 6 000 viewers at Hawkeye Downs Monday. manager Billy Greiner promises a repeat next year.

President Nixon signs the 26th Amendment certifying 18 year olds may vote in all elections. The document lay on a desk once used by Thomas Jefferson. Three 18 year olds from Detroit, Memphis and Concord witnessed the ratification and the group sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic before refreshments.
North Vietnam accused the Nixon administration of an obdurate stand in rejecting the Viet Cong peace proposal. The broadcast cited statements by Vice President Agnew Defense Secretary Laird and White House spokesman Ziegler as evidence the U S would back Saigon leaders under President Thieu.
President Nixon urged negotiators in the steel industry on Tuesday to reach a constructive settlement to keep steel competitive in world markets and support the economic recovery. He met with union and management leaders as contract talks near their July 31 expiry, stressing hard bargaining without prescribing a specific wage outcome. Six to nine inches of rain fell, one helicopter crewman killed and another wounded as weather halted B 52s and damaged smaller craft.
White House adviser Henry Kissinger arrived in New Delhi amid protests targeting U S arms shipments to Pakistan. Indian officials voiced anger over continued shipments despite East Pakistan’s crackdown, while demonstrators in Bombay and at the U S embassy in New Delhi clashed with police. Kissinger plans meetings with Prime Minister Gandhi before visiting Pakistan.
